Conquering Ageism In The Workplace

By Christine King

When it comes to applying for a certain position, most people only apply for the position if they know that they are suitable or qualified to handle that role. Ultimately, they may be 100 people that are qualified to take on one specific at all. Ultimately though it is the decision of the company as to who they choose to hire. In most cases if you get older people applying for the specific position, the younger people always chosen and accepted while old people are declined. The specific practice is referred to as ageism in the workplace.

People who are over a certain age are basically subjected to this type of treatment and discrimination. So if you are above middle age or probably even approaching it, you stand to be discriminated against when applying for a job. Even though this may not be the reason given to why you application was unsuccessful.

So what basically happens is that a position is advertised and then you get a number of applicants applying for that specific role. Ultimately, the applicants will range and different in age and qualifications as well. Ultimately, when it comes to choosing the most suitable candidate, most companies go with the younger applicant. This could be due to stereotypes related to growing older.

So it doesn't matter what industry you are applying at what company you are applying at for that matter as well. Ultimately, this is simply a stereotype that is attached to aging or the aging process in general. So all the people always seen as less fit than younger ones.

This happens all the time. It's not something that is just only now recently occurred, it is a trend that has taken place for many decades. However, the fact that older people have started to accept it and don't even apply for positions any longer because they know the definitely won't get it based on the age is something that needs to stop.

One of the things that people can do is basically try to get the laws in the countries changed. Lately the laws regarding the mandatory age for retirement has changed in certain countries and this is helping the employment process when it comes to middle-age people seeking a job.

While younger people may not necessarily be healthier than older people, because everyone is individuals. The fact that there is a stigma attached to older people or middle age people is what basically prevents them from actually getting the job. While this may seem like a fairly ridiculous argument, the fact of the matter is that it does happen in reality.

So in an effort to try and count this will prevent this from happening, they are various things that people can do. In some countries they have implemented anti-discrimination laws which basically disallows anyone being declined for a certain position due to they age. Lots of other countries have also implemented or abolished mandatory retirement ages. Ultimately, this is all intended to prevent older people from being discriminated against.
