The Reason Behind The R Word Pledge

By Thomas Cook

Spread the word to end the word is national campaign in the United States of America, aimed at encouraging its citizens to shun the use of the r wood, retard. Advocates who activist for the end of the R word want people to restrain from using it as much as possible. This should be avoided in all speeches, both everyday speeches, and colloquial ones. The R word pledge has been widely advocated for, since it is considered hurtful, demeaning and dehumanizing, to members of the society who have intellectual disabilities.

The key stakes in the pledges, have always insinuated that the use of these words should be as much as possible, avoided by all sane minds. They spearhead the usages of dignifying and respectful words when holding conversations and in colloquial sentiments. They have warned that using some of these terms may have adverse effects to the intended persons, attributing that it is not the wish of anyone to be insane or have intellectual issues, but is fate. Therefore, they should not be discriminated, both in practical situations, and in speeches.

The pledge was founded in the year 2009, during the Special Olympics Global Youth Activation Summit. Its main mission was to totally eliminate the usage of the word retard, from speeches ad general talk. The advocates of the motion believe that the individuals who have cognitive mental disabilities are, also capable of enjoying their lives and also share their experiences with the rest of the society.

In light of these references, they ascertain that retard and such-like words kill the esteems of the recipients, and are viewed to instill some sense of disrespect to them, and they tend to appreciate themselves less, or even no more. They disregard themselves, and may even end up in appalling circumstances like giving up on life, or even contemplating committing suicide.

By terming it as the phrase r-word, the advocates are usually intended to draw an analogy which points out to socially unacceptable and unethical racial terms, most especially nigger, among other disgusting and barbaric uncouth utterances and words that are defamatory to specific society members.

The campaign, intriguingly, was initiated by people of all intellectual affiliations, both the sane and those with poverty of intellect. They were brought together by the basic reason that they had common interests and self-drive to stand firm for the abolishment of defamatory names for instance retard, nigger and other cruel terminologies. They hoped that the society, and the globe at large, would eventually a more comfortable and acceptable place to be lived by one and all, regardless of the malfunctions, upstairs.

The campaign celebrates its annual national awareness day every 31st March, since when it was founded the same day in 2009. Ever since, the youth behind the campaign have been exceedingly assertive on their struggle. This can be further supported by the fact that they even compelled the White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel to publicly make an apology for using the word retards, in January 2010. He apologized to the Special Olympics Chief Executive. This shows how they are optimistic, social status notwithstanding.

This sent an overwhelming message on how the campaign was impartially aggressive, even against the untouchables. Conclusively, the campaigns have had intense impact on people. Their whims have been rendered relevant, and are considered to be progressive-oriented.
