By Jony Mozen

Florida has a lot to offer for vacationers and those seeking a warmer climate during the winter months. Along with the warm weather and sunny days this state contains cities that offer widely diverse activities to visitors and citizens alike. A prime example of this diverse agenda can be found in Fort Myers Florida. Visitors to this city can expect to find a wide range of activities for themselves and their children.

The first and arguably most popular attraction for this city are the beautiful beaches found here. With the beaches come water sports like para-sailing, jet boating and chartered fishing tours. The fishing charters give fishermen access to deep sea game as well as shallow water species that are found closer to shore. Another activity found near the beaches is fine dining. Many restaurants located nearby face the ocean and provide scenic views along with gourmet meals for their guests.

The Edison Ford Winter Estates can provide a full day of activities that include historical gardens, buildings and a museum. The botanical gardens contain over five hundred unique plants, flowers and trees. They also have an orchid program and propagation greenhouse that is open to the public and shopping opportunities are available in the gift shops. Visitors are able to tour the winter retreat homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford among other buildings on the property.

If you are a nature buff there are numerous opportunities for jaunts into the wild. Six Mile Cypress Slough offers tours by boat and walking that helps you find wild life and birds. The staff helps guests find photo opportunities of egrets, herons, wild pigs and alligators without disturbing the animals. A walking tour has been created with a boardwalk that leads to a blind where photographers can spend time waiting for animals to approach close enough for picture taking.

The Nature Park at the Shell Factory contains a rain forest aviary containing hundreds of rare and beautiful birds. Additionally, they have a butterfly garden, animal museum and a petting zoo for children. Another nature based adventure available is the Manatee World tours. The boat tours travel daily into their habitat. Manatees are endangered and therefore protected by law so the tours are designed to cause as little disturbance to them as possible.

In the center of this city activities include the Art Center where you can find displays and exhibitions of local artists as well as imported works. The city offers tours of local sites such as historical buildings and parks. One of the more popular tours covers many houses and locations believed to be haunted or that display paranormal activities.

Safaris into the Everglades on an air boat or river boat are available daily. These day long trips require the guest to bring their own refreshments for the day but the crew will keep you supplied with insect repellent to keep you comfortable. Gambling cruises are also available with reservations. Meals are supplied on these five and one half hour tours and entertainment can be found on the third floor.

Whether you are athletic and enjoy the beach and water sports or prefer to expand your knowledge of nature, art or history this city offers multiple opportunities to indulge your preferences.
