4 Things Pet Owners Should Know Before Halloween

By Robin Setser

Halloween is fast approaching, and to say that it's enjoyed by many people would be an understatement. What pet owners must know, though, is that there is even more responsibility on this day than others. Halloween should be a relaxing time for pets around the world, and their owners can ensure that this is the case. Here are 4 of the best tips that you can use to make your animal friend's holiday as relaxing as possible.

First, understand that not all pets like costumes. While they may look cute or endearing, you must take their comfort into consideration as well. If your dog or cat is wearing a costume, and they seem to be struggling to get it off or simply won't move at all, it's safe to assume that they don't like it. Don't keep your pet in a costume if they appear uncomfortable. This will help your pet enjoy the night more than they would otherwise.

Another thing to know about Halloween night is that keeping pets indoors is best. No matter how well-behaved your pet may be, they may become stressed or discouraged by seeing many people on the street at night. Instead of allowing them to leave the house, keep them in until the night is done. This will make your pet less tense, thereby allowing them to enjoy Halloween with their family that much more.

Third, be mindful of Halloween decorations, especially those that are around the house. If you plan on getting festive this time of year, understand that there are certain decorations that your pet can get to, particularly those that are powered by electricity. You wouldn't want them to chew on a wire or accidentally drop a plastic jack-o'-lantern, just to name a few possible instances. The safer a distance these are kept from your pet, the better.

Lastly, keep your candy as far from your pet's reach as possible. Anyone that has ever owned a pet will tell you that chocolate is very harmful. In fact, if consumed in large doses, it can lead to death. The same can be said for other types of sweets that are given on Halloween. They are meant for children, not pets, so make sure that they are located in a safe spot. By doing so, your own pet won't be able to reach them.
