Practical Space Planning Tips For Your Small Floor Plan

By Kevin Reynolds

Thanks to the shrinking supply of single-family properties and an ever-rising population, most house moves now involve downsizing to a smaller home. In fact, this might very well be your only option if you're planning to relocate. Stressful as that sounds, it's a cue for you to rethink your approach towards space planning Oakland.

Make no mistake -- creating a comfortable yet-still-functional home out of your new place will be a monumental challenge. So make peace with the fact that you won't be moving with your current furniture. With that in mind, one of the smartest things you can do is to start shopping for new furnishings. Be sure to look for pieces designed to play multiple roles, such as:

Nesting Tables: When trying to conserve space, one of the dilemmas you'll face is how to lose the dining table while still holding onto its function. It's here that nesting tables will prove priceless. As a combined unit, they'll take up less area but provide way more table surface area. You could also use them separately to create additional tables throughout the house.

Ottoman: As one of the most adaptable pieces of furniture, there's no limit to what an ottoman can do. Function-wise, it can act as a seat, footstool, or even as a side table. A large-enough one could even provide a sleep solution in desperate times. Besides, wouldn't it be great to have something that has a bit of wow factor in your tight quarters?

You don't have to be a genius to see the importance of decluttering prior to your move. Be sure to go though your stuff and edit out the items that no longer hold a place or importance in your life. Of course, you want to learn how you'll take care of storage for the rest of your possessions:

Look Up: Traditional storage options will not do you much good, so start training yourself to think vertical instead of horizontal. See those areas between the topmost window frames and the ceiling? They're ideal spots for installing shelves for your seasonal stuff. And if that's not enough for your woes, a floor-to-ceiling bookcase should do the trick.

Make the Most of Your Bedroom: Having your bed retrofitted with drawers will ensure the space below doesn't go to waste. Alternatively, just look for bins that will fit perfectly underneath if you're on a tight budget. And if neither of these prove practical, consider upgrading to a bed with built-in storage.

Baskets: No space for a jewelry pantry? Baskets will help you take care of the problem. As a matter of fact, why not consider hanging them from your walls throughout the space? Because they come in all manner of styles, it shouldn't prove difficult finding baskets that fit with your home decor. You can even put one over your fridge for bread and snacks.

Contrary to popular opinion, living in a tight abode isn't all doom and gloom -- it actually has its fair share of benefits. For instance, you'll have an easier time cleaning up and maintaining your home. The space limitations will also force you to fully stretch your creative juices.
