Important Details In Working Safely In A Shipyard

By Dorothy Hall

Shipyards are where ships are built either for commercial, industrial or military use. They are also called dockyards where this term is more associated with the repairs and maintenance of the vessels. They are located nearby seas or tidal rivers allowing their ships easy access whenever needed.

Working in these places could be quite dangerous because of the many mechanical equipment used for building and repairing. If you are a head of a shipyard Corpus Christi then you must take care of your workers and keep them safe. Here are some basic tips on what to do in avoiding accidents to happen in the workplace.

Proper training should be provided to the workers because when they know what they are doing then number of accidents would lessen. It would not necessarily mean that mishaps would not happen anymore though because the employees are still humans who make mistakes. But it is their responsibility to be safe by knowing how the equipment works.

There are certain employees that are assigned to handle certain tasks because they had specialized training regarding them. They have the necessary skills in doing the tasks and handling that respective equipment efficiently compared to others. Do not allow those without specialized training to handle these things to keep the chances low for accidents to happen.

It is also important for the workers to be briefed regularly about the safety guidelines in the workplace. This would remind them on what are the proper ways of doing their work which might have been forgotten after a long while. They must also be trained in first aid just in case something happens to their fellow worker.

Make sure the working areas have no clutters and clean by keeping the things in their proper places after they were used. Materials, tools and other stuffs lying around may get in the way and would be the reason for people to trip and cause an accident. There would be instances that items will be left behind so they should be cleared away from the pathways.

Safety measures and precautionary steps must be taken in ensuring the safety of the shipyard. This includes protective structures such as railings, mid rails and platforms and others that can help protect your employees from harm. This is essential so that when little mishaps like tripping happens, they would not fall directly but would be able to hang onto something.

Protective gears are important and must be worn always when working in the shipyard. Wearing them could save their lives as it would help lessen the severity of some accidents and outright prevent them in some cases. Examples of these gears are goggles, helmets, gloves and others that are specific for a particular job like flotation devices and body harnesses.

There are government standards to maintain the safety of workers and you should be informed about these so you can implement them. An open communication is necessary between officers and employees for easier coordination. Expert and senior workers are there for the newer ones to listen to their advice in ensuring safety.
