By Peter Wilson

There are people who knows different languages and they could use this as an advantage in their chosen field of work. Or these could be an additional source of income as a part time translator or teacher. They will not be having a hard time in traveling to other places if they already know the language of that particular place as well.

Unfortunately, there are some people who are only fluent in the written form but not with the spoken form of the language. There are differences with conversational English to Tagalog speakers with the native speakers that can cause confusion. Here are some things that you can do to improve it and its importance.

Learn a lot of different words that can be used in daily conversations. This will help expand your vocabulary and will help you convey what you really mean properly. There are some basic words that are used by native speakers that are not commonly used by non native speakers so try to find out which one and take note of them.

Some words are also used differently by Filipinos and could be not the proper way of saying what you really mean. When these are used with other Filipinos, the meaning could be understood by them but when spoken at other English speakers may mean different. Identify these words or phrases and replace it with the proper corresponding words that must be used instead.

Study the proper pronunciation by practicing it in front of a mirror. An exercise like this will help you in familiarizing the proper way of saying that word and try to use it in a sentence as well to understand its meaning better. Think and act out possible scenarios that these words may be used as well.

Meet and make friends with native speakers so that you can practice what you learned in actual conversations. Doing this will not only give you a chance of meeting new people but will also sharpen your skills in conversing on actual settings. You may also be able to learn new words which they will use when conversing with you.

Improving this skill is important and can be used on many situations and improve the opportunities available. You will be more confident when speaking with others and are able to express what you really want to. If you are still in school, this is a great help in class specially during reporting and other oral activities.

Career growth and possible promotions may open up and improve your career growth. You can use this as an advantage when talking with other people specially those who are higher in position than you. You will now also be confident in delivering your presentations and could impress those who are listening. This is particularly useful when there are a lot of foreign workers in the company.

This is also great if your work requires you to speak English every day, for example if you are a customer service agent in a business process outsourcing industry. This will greatly help you in understanding the concerns of the customers and being able to give the proper solutions of their concerns. There may be also job opportunities abroad that may open up because of your improved conversational skills.
