Details About Laser Hair Removal

By Kenneth Howard

This is a medical procedure whereby there is use of lasers to remove unwanted hairs. Lasers are intense and pulsating light beams. In the course of the removal, the beams pass through the skin to individual follicles. Intense heat which is produced by the lasers damages the follicles. This will inhibit any future growth. Laser hair removal is most effective in individuals with lighter skins.

The procedure is used in removing unwanted hairs. Common locations of treatment include underarms, legs, the chins and bikini line. However, it is possible to treat unwanted hairs in almost any other areas other than the eyelids and surrounding areas. The success of this procedure is influenced by color of hair and skin type. For example, it will be most effective for persons with light skin and dark hair because the beams target melanin.

With technological advancements, it is possible to do hair removal using lasers on people with dark skins. However, use of lasers does not offer 100 percent guarantee. There are some hairs that may be resistant to lasers and therefore regrow after treatment. New hairs that regrow will be lighter and finer. Various side effects can be experienced. Skin irritation is among the major ones. It is accompanied with discomfort and redness, all of which are temporary.

There may also be pigment changes. The areas that undergo treatment may become light or dark, normally on a temporary basis. Skin lightening has an effect on people with dark skin and especially so if the wrong laser settings are used. On rare occasions, laser removal will lead to scarring, blistering or crusting. Other effects can be graying of untreated sections and overgrowing of treated hairs.

For people interested in having the procedure, it is important to choose a doctor who is board certified in such a specialty such as cosmetic surgery or dermatology. They should have experience in use of lasers to remove hairs. You should be cautious before doing the procedure at spas, salons or any such facilities. If a licensed nurse is to do the procedure, it should be done under supervision of a doctor.

As part of the preparation, some useful tips come in handy. One useful tip is to stay away from the sun because of effects of tan. Tan will increase lightening effects. In the event that one has tan, they should wait until it completely fades before they undergo treatment. Some doctors recommend that one stays from the sun for 6 weeks or more.

The doctor will advise that one avoids electrolysis, plucking and waxing before treatment. These methods of hair removal disturb hair follicles and as a result interfere with laser functioning. On the other hand, shaving is accepted since it is a preservative of follicles and shafts. Actually, shaving is recommended so that the skin is not affected by lasers.

After treatment, one is supposed to avoid exposure to the sun. When the skin is healed, sunscreen should be used whenever one is in the sun. In the first few days after treatment, some shedding might occur. This should not be mistaken for hair regrowth.
