Advantages And Disadvantages Of Boat Shipping

By James Cole

A ship transport is one type of a watercraft which would carry passengers such as the people and also goods or cargo. Since in history, this watercraft became on of the largest freight carriers. Even if the importance of this for the people has been decreasing due to new aviation, it can still be useful in some other purposes like pleasure cruises and short trips. This is also cheaper when compared to the air transports.

Ship transport may be used with ships, barges, boat, or sailboats in any distances over the lakes and the oceans, even on canals and rivers as well. The purposes of this may be for recreation, military, or commerce purposes. Almost all types of goods and materials can be transported with this boat shipping, but this can be impractical for perishable products such as food.

However, the transport is cost effective. The cost efficiency of its construction and its maintenance is due to the small amount that is needed for the investment. The cargoes can be rescheduled. Examples for these cargoes would include consumer products such as bulk loads and heavy loads like grains, ores, coke, or coal. This transportation type became one of the significant roles in order to bring the parts closer into any places in the world.

The following are the advantages and the disadvantages of this. First advantage is having a lower cost. Oceans, rivers, and lakes are natural highways, and thus, there is no need for construction costs and maintenance. The two main types of water transportation are ocean and inland transport. Inland transport is considered to be the cheapest type for carrying the goods because of its low operation.

The boats have also a large capacity, thus, are capable of carrying large load quantities, it may be bulky or heavy and these loads may include timber, coal, etc. These are also offering services to customers unlike the railways, meaning the requirements can be changed over time, depending on what the customers have required. Lastly, accidents have a very low risk to happen unlike other transport forms.

And the next paragraphs are its disadvantages. The first disadvantage is its low speed. One important factor that needs to be considered for carrying goods is the speed. Speed affects the time especially in some cases in which there is a need for faster transportation. There are also limitations on the areas of operations.

There are times when operations cannot be done due to sudden changes of season like during winter. In this season, surely the rivers and the canals are frozen. And also during summer, the level of waters may be low. At times, rivers may change the courses, and thus, causing some dislocations of trade route. And lastly, this may not be suited for the small businesses since there is a longer time to carry the goods.

The ocean transport also has 2 main types including coastal shipping and overseas shipping. The advantages of using these two includes no required huge amounts of investment since the operation takes place on natural tracks. And because sea has a smooth surface, lesser amount of tractive power is only required.

Reducing the risks for damages is also an advantage. These transportation are suitable also for moving goods into distant places. These are indispensable also to foreign trades.
