Volunteering For Those In Need And Soaking It All In

By Betty Wright

There are a variety of benefits in volunteering which people find when they spend time giving some of their time to those who are less fortunate. Fewer people give their time to these projects these days. This may due to the fact that there is so much else on the go. A lot of people have two jobs to do because of the unstable economy. However, volunteering for those in need can offer you something that you may not have thought of before.

Often you go from one day to the next feeling as if you are in a routine without a lot of purpose. It can make you feel resentful at times because you are simply paying off the bills. You don't have anything in life that inspires you. This is where a volunteering experience can be hugely rewarding and often life changing.

You may begin to see life from another perspective once you have engaged with those who are less fortunate than yourselves. It is all very well driving past a homeless person. However, when you hand them a cup of soup and have a brief conversation, it can be a different story. They will show you how grateful they are, and this is truly humbling.

There are many older people who still volunteer in Half Moon Bay, CA in their 80's. They will still be active. They have a good spirit and are content. In most cases, they would have been doing various volunteering projects most of their life. People like this are inspiring. They often mentor other younger people.

On the flip side of the coin, many people will become more dedicated to a particular project spending a lot of their time engaging with the people and the folks who work in the charity. They may be inspired to help raise money and build the charity up. Someone like this will be spending their time effectively, instead of simply sitting in the pub drinking and engaging in meaningless conversation.

However, nobody is forced to volunteer. You are doing this out of your choice. This becomes more meaningful because it makes you feel that you really want to be there. You are also appreciated by those that you are serving. The organization you are volunteering for is generally welcoming and receptive. They will be appreciative of the hours that you are giving up.

Many people decide to take a project like this on every Saturday, for example. It can be working in a hospital, in a prison, with children or at an animal rescue center. Of course, there are some projects that are going to be traumatic and one has to be prepared for this. In some cases, you will be trained for this. It can also give you a new learning experience and provide you with growth.

In some cases, college students and teenagers find that they are inspired by certain programs to such a degree that it allows them to plan for a career in that area. It can be something like animal research or becoming a veterinarian. They may decide to become a social worker or a child psychologist where their goal would be to help children.
