Things To Avoid When Doing Exterior Painting

By Phyllis Schroeder

We all know that exterior paints has doubled its price after 20 years. Though this is somewhat a bad news to hear, these paints were also developed to last much longer through constant research and development. This process is very much costly and each of the house owners do not want to make this process immediate in the future. This is because they will have to spend so much on the high quality paints, coupled to buy various painting materials, so with spending so much time on that project and the labor of the painter.

With this development, the paint can now last for about 12 to 25 years or even more. But even if you use the best one together with the best materials, the warranty of its long lasting quality is still not certain. With this, below are some shortcuts that you must avoid when doing exterior painting Cambridge MA in having a beautiful and lasting house paint.

Do not apply any painting materials the same day with power washing. Power washing is just like thoroughly cleaning your walls. After removing all the dirt, you may put the caulk and bond the cracks or crevices which normally last for 24 to 48 hours. If you put the paint on the same day, the bonding of all the cracks cannot be completely done and can be affected by the chemicals of the different one, and vice versa.

Power washing never replaces hand scraping. Again, power washing removes the dirt and the grimes on the wall, it does not have the capability to remove those old paints. If you use high pressure washing, there is a tendency that the surfaces of your wall especially with wood material will be damaged. Thus, hand scraping is the only way that you could go in removing old paints.

Never caulk over an old caulk. The old caulk will loosen its particles and as time goes by the thing itself will separate from each other, thus creating new separation lines. If you put over a new caulk, it is more likely that it will follow the path of the old caulk as it is not hard. Yes, this could take so much of your time, but the quality in the end is priceless before any painting.

Finish coats on wooden surfaces should not be painted. The paints of the old one will eventually flake and putting a new one will flake with it as well. Remove the old ones and use a primer as it give better bonding materials which makes the finishing coats last long.

Do not just apply and apply, read the instructions. Every cans has instructions listed. No matter how good the quality of the product is or or how manufacturers guarantee it, it is still not effective if you do not follow the instructions.

Before putting the protection coating, make sure that the paint is all dry. The protection coating will help the the paints defy any types of weather that can affect it. These are best applied to the areas where stains are very visible and if the contractor have applied it properly.

Quality contractors would follow these suggestions without even asking a thing because they know that this is the right thing to do. It is good to ask questions and observe the work being done so that these shortcuts could be prevented to happen. Also ask the contractor if they offer different painting services so that all the work could be done at once.
